Biography/Artist Statement

Hyun Jung Ahn is a Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist from Seoul, South Korea. Through her work, she investigates enigmatic abstract forms, which she references as “shapes of mind.” She begins by drawing from her visual diary, which captures feelings, personal connections, and emotional states of being. She then translates these notions into minimalistic drawing, painting, and sculpture. Ahn was selected as the 'Emerging Young Artist' at La Mer Gallery, Seoul, South Korea, and was the winner of the Emerging Art Award at Baditto Art, Tuscany, Italy. She has attended residencies including Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT, MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, and Trestle Art Space, Brooklyn, NY. Ahn Graduated from Duk-Sung Women’s University, Seoul (in 2010 B.F.A and 2013 M.F.A) and received her second M.F.A in painting and drawing from Pratt Institute and currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

My current work talks about the relationship between the sky and an individual. The sky is familiar to everyone, but also the same time, it has infinity that we still don't know yet beyond the atmosphere. When I'm back and forth between Seoul and NYC, I realize the sky is the only thing that naturally connects the two locations. The sky doesn’t have a geographical limitation and can bring collective shared experiences about time and memories when we look up at it. It never needs to say that the sky and we are different existences in the universe, but there is something in common; our moods (weathers) constantly change depending on many reasons.  And I capture and collect the sky’s changing scenes depending on the time, temperature or seasons, and through the process, I try to connect its infinity and our tiny existence.

I borrow the visible element of sky and weather and use abstract visual language to create drawing, painting and multi-media installation. I have built my visual language with concise colors and condensed shapes since I lived in NYC in 2015. The current work take diverse processes, such as drawing, cutting out, sewing, stretching, and painting. Through the processes, the image is emptied of its figurativeness, and the essence is more firmly condensed. Each work has been used only two or three colors to focus the subject essential, and the material of cotton and linen is exposed on the painting surface to show the texture of the fabric. The stitching thread is invisible, but it connects the fabric pieces, and the interlocking seamlines convey the tension from the inside to outside the surface. When stretching the sewn cotton and linen on the canvas frame, The pulling power transforms the shape and line organically, bringing it closer to the form of nature. The seams on the surface not only divide the color plane but also connect each piece like a puzzle or mosaic to complete the abstract image.
